The Canon printer MX492 is a compact device that is not very large or heavy. You will get power and phone cords, Canon’s quick menu software, an install CD (which contains print and scan drivers), my image Garden utility for touching photos, and black and tri-color ink cartridges.

Features And Design

The printer weighs only 13 pounds and has a compact black unit with a dimension of 17.2 X 11.7 X 7.5 inches. Also, the Canon MX492 offers effortless printing, copying, scanning, and faxing. The automatic auto document feeder can hold up to 20 sheets. Plus, the controllers have two-line monochrome LCD membrane touch buttons that offer a numeric keypad, buttons to launch scan or copy, monochrome and color start buttons, tools buttons, left, right, and home buttons.

You get the option to connect your printer to WiFi or directly to your computer via USB. However, it doesn’t provide a wired Ethernet connection. Also, it uses cloud-based printing with AirPrint, Google Print, and Canon’s Print services.

The input and output trays are available when you pull down the front panel. Also, the input tray is at the bottom of the printer and has the capacity of 100 letter or legal-size sheets. It can adjust to small paper, photo paper, and envelopes sizes. 

And the output tray is present just above the input tray, which catches the printed output. Also, the door is just above it, exposing the print head carrier where you can put the black and tri-color ink cartridges.

Set Up And Performance

Setup includes the unpacking, ink & cartridge, software installation, and the way you want to connect your printer. The Canon printer MX492 uses only two ink cartridges- black and tri-color cartridges, including Cyan, magenta, and yellow ink. Hence, this printer’s manufacturing cost is generally low, but the operating costs increase significantly. Also, if any color cartridges run out, you need to replace them even if the other two cartridges still have ink. 

Now comes the software installation, which is easy and quick. Also, the install menu offers you the choice of utilities you need to install, such as Canon’s Quick Menu and My Image Garden. It further offers a second creative or craft utility, such as Canon creative park premium, although it should be downloaded as it’s not included on the install CD.

Regarding performance, Canon has a print speed of 8.8 images per minute in black and 4.4 ipm in color. However, it doesn’t include automatic duplex printing. It yields a good quality image. The Canon MX492 is appreciated for school reports. Although, it doesn’t provide good image quality on all types of paper. 

Copying and scanning features are also considered in an MFP. A 20-page document feeder is enough for multipage document copy and scanning. However, there is no duplexing for copy and scanning.
